Q: How do I know what size generator I need for my home or business?
A: Generators come in many sizes and styles the first thing you will need to do is decide what it is you went to run on the generator:
- You do that by making a list of things that you must have and a list of the wants.
- Next you will have to calculate the amount of watts needed to run that item (most appliances have info on there name plate).
- After you have the calculated the watts you can size your generator.
- The generator must be sized at least 125% of the calculated load if you do not it will result in premature failure of the generator.
Q .How do I know what type of generator I should get?
A. After deciding the size you need to determine the fuel that will run the generator the most common is gasoline or propane, but you can get a generator that will run on most any fuel.
Q. Do I want a portable generator or permanently installed generator?
A. That decision will depend on several factors they are in no particular order:
- Price the price of an installed generator will be more than an portable
- Convenience an installed generator will be setup and ready to run automatic a portable will require you to set up and start it when you lose power
- Maintained all though both generators will require annual maintenance the portable generator can be done by most home owners the installed generator will require an annual service visit
Q. Can I install my own generator?
A. The short answer is yes, BUT the law doesn't allow a home owner to do electrical work on their home with the proper inspections.
The installation of generators is not something that I would recommend for the average person do to the fact the wiring must be done in such a way to prevent power from the generator going out to the utilities lines and the utilities power feeding back to toe generator.
