Whole Home Generators

Q: How do I know what size generator I need for my home or business?
A: Generators come in many sizes and styles the first thing you will need to do is decide what it is you went to run on the generator:
  • You do that by making a list of things that you must have and a list of the wants.
  • Next you will have to calculate the amount of watts needed to run that item (most appliances have info on there name plate).
  • After you have the calculated the watts you can size your generator.
  • The generator must be sized at least 125% of the calculated load if you do not it will result in premature failure of the generator.
Q .How do I know what type of generator I should get?
A. After deciding the size you need to determine the fuel that will run the generator the most common is gasoline or propane, but you can get a generator that will run on most any fuel.
Q. Do I want a portable generator or permanently installed generator?
A. That decision will depend on several factors they are in no particular order:
  1. Price the price of an installed generator will be more than an portable
  2. Convenience an installed generator will be setup and ready to run automatic a portable will require you to set up and start it when you lose power
  3. Maintained all though both generators will require annual maintenance the portable generator can be done by most home owners the installed generator will require an annual service visit
Q. Can I install my own generator?
A. The short answer is yes, BUT the law doesn't allow a home owner to do electrical work on their home with the proper inspections.
The installation of generators is not something that I would recommend for the average person do to the fact the wiring must be done in such a way to prevent power from the generator going out to the utilities lines and the utilities power feeding back to toe generator.

Key Priority: Safety

Many people want to do things themselves to save some money. We all want to save money right? With Electrical work though, safety should be one's utmost concern. Handling wires can become extremely dangerous if you are not properly training. Keep in mind, even though its in wires, you are still handling electricity. We tell children not to stick their fingers in outlets, just like you also shouldn't be handing wires without the proper safety training. Electricians have that proper training. Electricity can injure or kill if not handled with the proper precautions, even at only 120 volts.

Electricians also have the proper training on how to correctly hook up the wiring. A vast majority of household fires are caused by faulty wiring. You also need to consider the value of your home while handling electrical needs. Every state has different regulations and laws on electrical work. Electricians have to stay up to date on these rules and that can give you a piece of mind. You know it will be done to the proper standards and you are still safe in your home.
